Design Your Living Room in Scandinavian Style

The Scandinavian interior design has become so popular that the whole world has fallen in love with it. And what’s not to love? Simplicity, natural elements, minimalism and functionality are the main aspects this style thrives on. It’s a style that can add to the elegance of any home. Scandi living rooms have an especially distinctive aspect that offers comfort, utility and beauty. This pure, unique style is centred around warm functionality, clean lines, flawless craftsmanship and understated gracefulness. That being said, if you are ready to transform your living room into a hygge  heaven, here are some basics you need to know.

First and foremost, you will never see floor-to-floor carpeting and Scandinavian design in the same room. The traditional Scandinavian flooring is hard-wood, in its natural colour, preferably light or painted white. It expands the space and invites the light. White walls add to the minimalistic look and serve as a canvas for making a statement with simple decorative accents. Next, the lighting is of essential importance. Scandinavian countries have as little as seven hours of daylight during the winter months, so increasing the brightness anyway possible is a big priority. There are several types of lighting this style relies on for mood building, the most popular ones being the pendants and the wall scones. In addition, candles are a must as they can make the space glow and appear a bit whimsical.

Furthermore, the colour play (or lack thereof) of the whole design allows for certain pieces of furniture to pop up. Neutral colours are the symbol of the Scandinavian design and combining white and beige, light grey, dusty pinks and pale pastels in general is the most popular way to do it. The usual combos of not more than two colours are what makes the Scandinavian style appear so neat and classy and that is why most of the space should remain monochromatic.

Regarding the furniture, the Scandinavian style seeks something seamless, scenic and sturdy. Clean lines are the face of Scandinavian design. Sofas, tables and chairs embrace the mid-century look and provide smoothness with their round edges and natural hues. However, Scandinavian furniture is very leggy, so one has to be very careful not to make it look like the place is full of twigs. To shatter the whiteness of the room, wood furniture is a must. Scandinavian modern living rooms are usually associated with the mandatory presence of a sideboard. The perfect fit would be a solid timber chest of drawers as it can both add to the elegance and be purposeful at the same time. Simple, clean lines and organic woods is the perfect match regarding form and function and a solid timber chest of drawers can deliver exactly that. Large, dark rugs and wall-to-wall bookshelves, on the other hand, ought to be avoided as they close up the room.

Finally, adding fresh flowers and botanicals to liven up the space is considered a necessity. Other things that can complement the style are copper light fixtures and large mirrors (to bounce light around the room), cosy, warm textiles like sheepskins, wool or mohair blankets and soft cotton materials which can add another layer of texture to the living room. Decorative accents like ceramic vases and pillows with geometric patterns can add subtle colour to the space, providing both a welcoming touch and a luxurious feel.
