Why You Should Be Drinking Organic White Wine
Wine drinkers around the world are pretty much divided as to whether white or red wine is the better option. The good news for everyone though, is that, when consumed moderately, both have many health benefits, and even more so if they are organic. While some people don’t really have preferences but rather consume wine in different situations, there are those who like white wine better due to its fresher and crispier flavour.
The most popular alcoholic beverage in the world – wine has been around for millennia. Probably discovered by accident, wine has played an important role in many cultures throughout history. No other beverage has ever inspired so many legends, none has been mentioned in so many important books – so much so that even nowadays it’s still a part of many religious rites and rituals, not to mention celebrations and everyday life.
White wine, with all its varieties, is consumed in incredible quantities worldwide every day. Even though there isn’t any definitive proof, it’s believed that it has existed for at least four thousand years, which would make it younger than red wine.
A Glass of Health and Nature
There are many reasons why you should choose to buy organic sulphate free white wine instead of the conventional wines you can find everywhere. With the growth of awareness of the benefits of organic production, both for us and for nature, the trend has extended to wine lovers and winemakers alike.
What we call organic agricultural practices, essentially means growing crops without the use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers. Simply put, organic agriculture is nothing else but natural agriculture. But, when we say that a wine is organic, that doesn’t only refer to the way the grapes have been grown, but also to the environment in which it has grown, namely the land, as well as the winemaking process itself.
White wine offers many different delicious varieties, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and many more, all with their own characteristics, in flavour, sweetness, etc. While ‘in matters of taste, there can be no disputes’, when it comes to what’s better for you, it is easier to choose. And since organically grown grapes are much healthier, it’s clear that organic wine is healthier as well.
Low Levels of Sulphite
Organic wines are low sulphite wines, which is very important, especially for people who are sensitive to sulphites. While they are good food preservatives or enhancers, the sulphites present in the wine can cause headaches, nausea, diarrhoea, etc., in some cases, even hives, swelling and other allergy-like reactions, and in those suffering from asthma, they can even cause shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing. So obviously, it’s much healthier to consume sulphate free white wine instead of the opposite.
Good for Your Physical Health
Wine has always been consumed for its healing powers. And while in the past they have been attributed to the gods and goddesses of viticulture, nowadays we know for a fact that drinking the occasional glass of wine, does have a positive impact both on our physical and our mental health. Nonetheless, often people think that white wine isn’t as good for you as red wine. But even though the effects of moderate consumption of white wine haven’t been researched as much as those of its red counterpart, there are many indications that white wine, and especially preservative-free white wine, also has a lot of health benefits.
One of the reasons why white wine is considered to be healthy is the high presence of antioxidants and anthocyanins, and they are present in higher concentrations in organic sulphite free white wines. Antioxidants are vital for our health, since they help our body fight unstable atoms, called free radicals, that speed up the ageing process, and can cause health issues.
These antioxidants protect our bodies from many different potential illnesses and diseases that can be caused by them, such as cancers, diabetes, heart diseases, obesity, bad cholesterol, and so on, and increase our youth and longevity. They are also good for your skin and your bones, as well.
Dry wines are considered to be healthier, because of the lower amounts of sugar. High amounts of sugar aren’t just bad when it comes to weight control, but they can also affect our bodies in other negative ways. Amongst other health issues, sugar can worsen or even provoke heart disease, kidney failure and stroke.
Good for Your Mental Health
According to research wine is also good for our mental health if consumed in moderate amounts. Because the antioxidants present in white wine promote good blood circulation, meaning that oxygen and glucose can get to your brain without obstacles – decreasing the chance for mental illness. Furthermore, according to studies, moderate wine intake can decrease the risk of depression, as well as lower the levels of stress, thus preventing all issues that can arise from it.
