Things to Pay Attention to When Buying Skincare Products
When it comes to facial skin, we need to be extra careful when using products and know exactly what we put on our face. Facial skin is more sensitive and delicate than the rest of your skin – it is the area that’s most exposed to harmful UV rays as it is the least covered. Plus, the skin around the eyes is very thin and prone to wrinkles, which means it is most easily damaged.
For that very reason, you can’t just experiment with facial skin products. It is best that you do your research first before you put anything on your skin that might cause irreversible damage. And speaking of unknown and irreversible damage, it is not quite guaranteed that chemicals used in skin products are 100% harmless. So, why risk it? Your best bet is going for natural, organic and plant-based ingredients when planning your skincare regimen. My personal favorite? Sukin skincare products!
What I love most about Sukin is that when reading the label of their products, I can recognize most of the ingredients! They contain no harsh chemicals whatsoever. And being the plant lover that I am, vegan brands definitely have my loyalty. No animal derivative ingredients and definitely no animal testing. Sukin’s products are biodegradable, which means besides being gentle on your skin, they also don’t pollute the ocean. And I’m certain that environmentally conscious brands are also concerned about the health of their costumers.
The one product I swear by when trying to bring my skin close to perfection is the Sukin blemish control. Blemishes are spots or marks on the skin with the most common type being acne. Acne is caused when oil, dirt or bacteria clog hair follicles. Although we cannot control certain contributing factors, such as genetics, we can decide how to go about treating our acne breakouts. Some natural products, such as the Sukin blemish control moisturizer, toner, and facial wash can help fight the cause of breakouts. Most quality blemish control products contain tea tree oil and eucalyptus (have anti-bacterial properties), willow herb (reduces redness and soothes the skin) and quince (hydrates the skin).
Antioxidant properties
Free radicals are detrimental to our skin’s health as they cause damage to the tissue. Antioxidants help prevent or delay cell damage. The main benefits for your skin are their anti-inflammatory property – they helo rejuvenate the skin and reduce wrinkles, improving your skin’s health and fighting sun damage.
Anti-inflammatory properties
Organic products that have anti-inflammatory properties fight red skin, itching, eczema, and dermatitis.
Tannins
Tannins make your pores look smaller and remove the extra oils from your skin. And honestly, isn’t that all we want to achieve from our skincare routine?
Polyphenols and flavonoids
Polyphenols protect our skin against free radicals, and flavonoids have been found to protect it from the harmful UV rays.
Hydrating properties
Some plants such as quince can help in skin hydration.
Antiseptic and antibacterial properties
Antiseptic skin cleansers can reduce bacteria, and thus reduce the risk of skin infection. And by proxy, reduce the risk of acne outbreaks!
Salicin, or salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is commonly used for acne treatments. It exfoliates the skin, removes dead skin cells and anything that clogs the pores.
Bottom line is, plant-based skincare products nourish the skin with their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and hydrating properties. A natural and safe skincare routine is the best way to make your skin healthier and glowing.
